Silver Bay by JoJo Moyes
Let me start by saying I've read everything written by JoJo Moyes that I could get my hands on.
She tells a good story with well-developed characters. That being said, Silver Bay was not my favorite of her books.
It took me a LONG time to get into the story. And I didn't like one of the main characters, Liza.
But I did like some of the other characters--Liza's daughter Hannah, her aunt Kathleen and Mike the man from England who almost destroys her happy existence in Silver Bay, Australia.
The basic plot is thus: Liza flees England with her young daughter (for reasons that come out pretty far into the book) and settles in with her Aunt Kathleen in picturesque Silver Bay. Liza takes tourists on whale and dolphin tours and Kathleen runs a ramshackle inn. Then financier Mike comes to town with plans to turn the area into a popular modern resort--until Silver Bay and Liza cast a spell over him. I could understand how Silver Bay could enchant him. But Liza was kind of prickly and moody, so I never understood why he was so drawn to her.
Anyway, I liked the second half of the book better than the first. Mike tries to redeem himself and protect the future of this little family he's come to love. (But I still didn't like Liza.)
If you're new to JoJo Moyes, try One Plus One or Me Before You, both of which I loved.
