Lady from Burma by Allison Montclair

This is part of the charming Sparks & Bainbridge series featuring Iris and Gwen as they run their marriage bureau in London after the war--and help the police solve several murders. This one starts with the titular Lady from Burma showing up at the marriage bureau. But she's not looking for love for herself. Rather, she is dying and wants me to make sure her husband won't be alone after she's gone. When she is soon found dead out in the woods holding a book of poetry, the young cop investigating the case thinks it's a homicide, not suicide--as does Iris, so the two of them try to find out what really happened to the Lady from Burma. At the same time, Gwen is trying to get herself declared legally competent (she had a breakdown when her husband died during the war and required a stay in a mental hospital).  When it looks like the hearing will not go her way, she decides to investigate what the firm that's supposed to be representing her financial interests has really been up to.

Compelling story, likeable characters. Perfect read for a snowy weekend in January.
