Lock In by John Scalzi

I'm not a big sci-fi fan but someone recommended Lock In to me. And I enjoyed it.
I will recommend that you read the introduction carefully before getting into the main story.
I had to keep going back to the intro because I was a little confused at first.

The basic premise is that a mysterious illness hits the earth. Some people get mildly ill but others suffer from "lock in"--they can't move but are completely aware of what is going on around them.
These people are called Hadens. They have "threeps" a mobile robot version of themselves that allows them to go out into the world while their body is home in its lock-in state. There are also "integrators" who can borrow people's bodies for a while. Now onto the real story:

Chris Shane is a Haden. His threep version has just started working for the FBI. He and his partner Vann, a former integrator with an attitude, are assigned to investigate the case of a death at the Watergate Hotel. Something about the case strikes both Shane and Vann as more than just a simple homicide or suicide--and that thinking turns out to be right. Lots of twists and turns ensue.

Once you get all the Hadens, threeps, and integrators straightened out, it's an interesting story--and kind of a scary concept.
