Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney

This book is definitely not light reading for our pandemic times. Adam and Amelia have been married for about a decade and things are getting a little testy. She wins a weekend in Scotland for them in an office lottery, which she hopes will reinvigorate their marriage. He really doesn't want to go. They head out in a snow storm and when they finally arrive in the dark, the place they're staying--an old chapel turned into a home--is deserted and kind of creepy. The power keeps going out. Then the pipes freeze so there's no water. Then they think someone is lurking outside. The two of them are irritated with each other but kind of have to work together to find a way to get back home.

Interspersed throughout the book are letters that Adam's wife has written on each wedding anniversary, without ever giving them to him. This gives us a behind-the-scenes look at what was going on in the marriage as Adam's career as a screenwriter takes over their lives.

There is an interesting twist near the end that puts the whole story in a different perspective. And one final twist in the last chapter that really piqued my interest and made me wonder what was going to happen next. (Which we don't find out) If anyone else out there has read this book, what do you think Samuel was going to do next?

None of the characters in this book are likeable. They're very self-absorbed. Though I did kind of like Bob, the dog.
