Good ambiance--and a good story
If you love mysteries, check out Phillip Kerr's "Bernie Gunther" series.
They're set in Germany before/during/after World War II and you really get a sense of what life was like in those tumultuous (and paranoid) times. The hero is Bernie Gunther, an honest cop in Berlin who loves Germany but hates the Nazis--which does not make for a good career plan--or an easy life. The newest is If The Dead Rise Not, but start at the beginning of the series with March Violets.
