A Grave in the Woods by Martin Walker

I love the "Bruno Chief of Police" series. But this was not my favorite book in the series. I wanted more interactions between Bruno and his friends, and less talk about sometimes obscure events in French history.

The story starts with Bruno on medical leave after being shot in the shoulder. Well, he's supposed to be on medical leave but ends up getting involved in several cases and an impending flood that is heading toward St Denis. He also finds that Mademoiselle Cantagnac (a new hire by the city) has taken over his office and doesn't look like she plans to leave. Anyway, a grave is discovered in the woods on land that a British man wants to develop as a bed and breakfast/cooking school. When the grave is opened, the bodies of two German women and an Italian man are discovered. Then an American woman shows up in town and seems very nervous to Bruno for some reason. Then Bruno gets word that someone has been attempting to hack his phone and the city hall computers. Plus there's a flood heading toward St Denis. It's a lot for a man on medical leave to deal with.

I love the series so I will keep reading, but I hope the next book goes back to the way the earlier books are structured, with Bruno interacting with the townspeople and his friends more.
