The Crossing by Michael Connelly

The Crossing is the latest in the excellent Harry Bosch series--with the addition of Mickey Haller (Harry's half-brother) from the Lincoln Lawyer series.

Harry is now a retired cop (not exactly by choice) and Mickey (a defense lawyer) needs him to be the investigator on a case he's working on because his regular investigator was injured in a traffic accident. Harry knows how this will look (working for the defense) to his former colleagues but like Mickey, he thinks the guy who's been arrested might really be as innocent as he proclaims. So he starts looking at the case from a cop's perspective and soon turns up a lot of inconsistencies. He also ends up in the crosshairs of the real killers, who obviously don't want the truth to come out. It's an engrossing story and it will be interesting to see where this series goes next.
