Going Zero by Anthony McCarten
This is both a page-turner and a cautionary tale. Cy Baxter is a wealthy and powerful cyber genius. He has come up with a plan to merge his company with the CIA--gaining control over vast stores of knowledge about American citizens. To prove that his surveillance program works he comes up with the Going Zero program. Ten people are chosen--some average Joes and some professionals--to see if they can elude surveillance for 30 days. If anyone can, they will win $3 million --and Cy's contract with the CIA will be cancelled. One by one, his team tracks down 9 of the 10 participants. But the one they can't catch is a lowly librarian who seems particularly adept at evading all surveillance measures.
We eventually find out what is motivating both the librarian and Cy, which makes it more of a battle between good and evil. If anyone else has read this, I do have a question about the very end and whether her final decision will have the impact she's hoping for.
It's an engrossing and thought-provoking story.
