The Boyfriend by Frieda McFadden
Sydney Shaw is in her 30s, lives in NYC, and is having a hard time finding good men to date. When a dating app matches her with a good looking guy named Kevin, she is optimistic--till Kevin shows up looking nothing like the cute guy in the photo. He also seems singularly obsessed with her, considering they just met--and tries to assault on the way home. A mystery man shows up and helps save her, then heads off into the night. They cross paths again when another date that seems to be going well abruptly ends when her date is repulsed because Syndey got a nosebleed that won't stop bleeding. The handsome stranger, Tom, who turns out to be a doctor, once again comes to her rescue and offers to take her out to dinner. They start dating and Sydney is ecstatic till she starts noticing some red flags about her new beau. What makes things worse is that her dear friend Bonnie, who had been dating a handsome doctor too, is found murdered. And Sydney begins to wonder if Bonnie's handsome doctor is her handsome doctor.
The story bounces between Sydney and Tom in the present and Tom's life in the past, where he had an abusive father, a best friend named Slug, and was madly in love with a girl named Daisy. There are lots of twists and turns in the story. It's a quick read for a cold winter weekend.
