Judge Stone by Jas Patterson and Viola Davis
Mary Stone is a black circuit court judge in a very conservative small town in Alabama. Life is going along when a case lands on her docket that threatens to totally upset her world. A 13-year-old girl had gotten an abortion from the young new doctor in town, even though it was illegal in Alabama. The secret comes out when she has complications and lands in the ER--and the doctor gets arrested. Tempers flare in the town and outsiders show up to protest either against abortion or in favor of the doctor. Several higher-ups try to convince Judge Stone to turn the case over to a judge in a bigger city, but she refuses. Then threats against her begin. It's a timely and thought-provoking story.
