All the Way Gone by Joanna Schaffhausen

 This is another in the Annaliesa Vega series set in Chicago. Anna, now a PI, gets involved with the case of a young woman who fell/was pushed off a balcony and died. Which turns out to be related to another case of a woman writing a book about a supposedly good sociopath, a brilliant surgeon. She wants Anna to check out whether the surgeon might have been involved in the young woman's death. At the same time, Anna's husband, Nick, is trying to strengthen his relationship with his newly discovered teenage daughter, Cassidy, whose mother is dying. There are a lot of twists and turns in this story.
