Taken by Robert Crais

Jack and Krista are hanging out in the California desert one night when they stumble onto a "coyote" journey gone badly wrong--and suddenly find themselves being held prisoner with a group of illegals. Krista's mother, thinking Krista has run off with Jack, hires PI Elvis Cole ("the world's greatest detective") to find the girl. Then Elvis disappears into the shadowy world of illegals and drug cartels and Joe Pike sets out to find him before it's too late.

I have loved the character of the wisecracking Elvis Cole since his first appearance in The Monkey's Raincoat. I also love his taciturn best friend, Joe Pike. Some of the books in the series focus more on Elvis, others on Joe. In this one, both play prominent roles as Elvis races against the clock to save Jack and Krista while Joe races to save Elvis.

Taken is an engrossing story and a thought-provoking one as you realize the lengths some people will go to for a chance at a new life--and the lengths others will go to take advantage of them.
