Movie review: Unfinished Song

If you loved the documentary Young at Heart, you will like Unfinished Song. YAH told the story of a group of seniors who formed a singing group and toured singing rock 'n roll songs. Unfinished Song is a fictionalized version of a similar group of senior singers. The group includes a lively woman named Marion (played by Vanessa Redgrave) who's dying of cancer and married to a grumpy guy named Arthur (played by Terrence Stamp). Arthur doesn't want Marion to waste her dwindling energy on the singing group, but she loves it and won't give it up. When Marion passes, Arthur is drawn to the group and to friendship with the spunky young music teacher (played by Gemma Arterton). The two main subplots involve a singing competition that the teacher thinks they should enter and Arthur's strained relationship with his only son.

Gemma Arterton is the main reason to see this movie, though both Vanessa and Terrence are good.
She refuses to let Arthur become a recluse after Marion's death and keeps nudging him to join the group his wife loved so much. And even when her personal life is in a shambles, her innate optimistic comes shining through.
