The Newlyweds by Nell Freudenberger

Amina lives in Bangladesh. George lives in Rochester, NY. They meet over the internet and pursue a courtship. Eventually George comes to meet her and propose. Seeing a chance for a better life, she accepts
and moves to America with him. Amina learns to adjust to life in America and life with George. But then someone from each of their pasts threatens to upset the comfortable life they've established.

I like the character of Amina because she's smart and feisty. She knows what she wants and is willing to work hard to get it--an education, a job, happiness. When Amina goes back to Bangladesh to bring her parents to Rochester in the second half of the book, she realizes just how far she's really come in her life as well as what she's given up.
