The Farm by Tom Rob Smith

I really liked Child 44 by the same author so was eager to read The Farm.
It was a quick read but I have to say that by time I got to the end, I'm still not exactly
sure what really happened. Which may have been the point--or maybe I missed something.

Daniel's parents left England and retired on a farm in Sweden (the country his mother had fled under somewhat murky circumstances as a teen). Everything seems to be going well till Daniel gets alarming (and conflicting) messages from his mother and father. His father says his mother is having a breakdown and should be hospitalized and his mother says his father can't be trusted--then she shows up in England, begging Daniel to listen to her evidence. She talks about a domineering neighbor whose adopted African daughter has disappeared--and no one seems to be looking too hard to find her. The mother had befriended the young woman and is convinced that something evil is going on around The Farm. Then Daniel's father appears and tries to convince him that it's all in her head. By the end, we get some answers but there are a lot of questions left.
