Norwegian by Night by Derek Miller

My sister recommended this book and while I didn't love it as much as she did, I did love Sheldon, the main character, and "Paul," the little boy whose life he tries to save.

Sheldon is American but is now living in Norway with his granddaughter and her husband since the death of his wife. One day he saves the life of the little boy upstairs, whose mother has been murdered by her violent ex. The old man and the boy take off, heading for his granddaughter's country house, not knowing that the killer is also heading that way. The cops are trying to find Sheldon, the boy and the killer and are amazed at how this feisty 80-something has managed to elude everyone.

Throughout the journey, we get Sheldon's memories of his son, Saul, who died in Vietnam, his guilt over which is a major motivator to protect young Paul. At points, it is a little confusing about what really happened and what Sheldon imagined happening. But Sheldon is a wonderfully well-developed character, using all his wiles to protect this small child he doesn't even know.
