The Vacationers by Emma Straub

The Post family is leaving NYC and heading to Mallorca for a 2-week vacation. Sounds idyllic, right? Except the Posts are in a state of turmoil. Franny Post just found out that her husband of more than 30 years, Jim, was fired for sleeping with an intern at work--who happened to be the daughter of a board member. Daughter Sylvia is getting ready to go off to college and feeling restless. And son Bobby, supposedly a successful real estate salesman in Miami, has been leading a secret life that is really not going well at all. Add to the mix Fran's best friend Charles and his husband Lawrence, who are awaiting word about adopting a baby and Bobby's older girlfriend, Carmen, and sparks are guaranteed to fly.

I liked the Mallorcan setting, which added an interesting twist to the "family on vacation" story. And I liked the character of Sylvia, who often seemed the sanest of this bunch. It's not a groundbreaking book, but it's a good summer read.
