Born a Crime by Trevor Noah

Even if you're not a fan of the Daily Show and host Trevor Noah, I think you'll find this book about his life growing up in South Africa fascinating.

Noah had a black mother and a white (Swiss) father--and their union was indeed a crime during the time of apartheid, hence the title. Because Noah was clearly the result of such a "mixed" union, his mother had to keep him under wraps for much of his childhood. And Trevor felt like he never really fit in. He wasn't black, he wasn't white, and his family didn't associate with the other "coloreds." But his mother was committed to seeing him be a success.

Trevor's story is told through a series of essays, some of which are hilarious, others of which are heartbreaking. His mother sounds like a truly remarkable woman--an opinion reinforced after I read the last essay in the book. I highly recommend Born a Crime and think it would be a great choice for a book group.
