Lions of Lucerne by Brad Thor

Lions is the first in the popular "Scot Horvath" series. I had read several of the later installments
but happened upon this one in the library and decided to see how it all started. And it's quite the beginning.

Horvath, former Navy Seal, is now working for the Secret Service. He has been assigned to protect the First Daughter when she and her father head to Utah for a ski vacation. At the end of day, Scot and "Goldilocks" opt for an easier run while the President and his team opt for a more difficult run. Out of the corner of his eye, Scot thinks he sees something going on with the other group--then all hell breaks loose as an avalanche threatens to engulf him and his charge. By the end, thanks to his quick thinking, Scot and "Goldilocks" are alive--barely--but the President's whole team is dead and the President himself is missing.

The clues indicate that a Middle Eastern group was responsible but Scot thinks it's unlikely that they would have chosen such a snowy venue--or been so well organized. Then Scot realizes that someone is pulling strings to make him look bad--and guilty of murder. And he's on the run, with only his wits and training to keep him alive as he searches for the missing president. His search leads him to Switzerland, as you might expect since the book is called Lions of Lucerne, where his path crosses with a beautiful Swiss government agent who is trying to investigate a slippery higher-up in the Swiss intelligence community. It's really quite the page turner.
