August Snow by Stephen Mack Jones

August Snow is a very promising first novel for Jones. And I hope it's the beginning of a series because I liked the setting (Detroit) and the characters.

Snow is a half-black, half-Mexican ex-cop in Detroit who uncovered corruption, got fired, sued, and won a multi-million dollar settlement from the city. Now he's back in the Mexicantown neighborhood where he grew up, slowly renovating the houses on his street. He gets a call from a rich Grosse Pointe matron whose husband's murder case he had worked on as a cop. She is convinced there is something fishy going on at her private wealth management bank. Shortly thereafter, she is found dead. The cops think it was suicide but August isn't so sure. Since he's persona non grata with most of the police force, he's kind of on his own to unravel the mystery--which does indeed turn out to be related to shenanigans at the bank.

There are a lot of memorable characters in this book--Skittles the computer hacker, Frank the upstanding military vet. August's neighborhood buddy, Tomas. A feisty FBI agent named Megan. And a hapless drug dealer turned home renovator named Jimmy Radmon. I do hope we find out what happens to them next.
