Behind You is the Sea by Susan Muaddi Darraj

This is a lovely, often heartbreaking, collection of interconnected short stories about an Arab-American community in Baltimore. It was sad to see how many of the women in these stories were shunned by members of their family for things that were beyond their control--such as the woman who divorced the abusive husband who blamed her for infertility when she had a hunch he was the problem. Or the teenage girl who was shipped off to her (thankfully very loving) grandparents after a suicide attempt.  And it was fascinating how some of the elders thought coming to America was the best thing that had ever happened to them while others spent their whole adult lives longing to return home to Palestine. My favorite male character was Marcus, a cop in Baltimore, who had to take his estranged father's body to Palestine for burial--and when he got there realized exactly why his parents had left.

The whole book is only about 200 pages so it's a quick read but definitely worth investing your time in.
