A Most Agreeable Murder by Julia Seales

If you're in the mood for a romp that combines Jane Austin, Bridgerton, and Only Murders in the Building, check out A Most Agreeable Murder. As in Pride and Prejudice, The Steele Family is afraid of losing their home if at least one of the daughters can't find a wealthy husband. Beatrice, the oldest sister, wants to be a detective, so she's not really looking for a husband. Louisa, the second daughter, is seen as the family's best chance as she is beautiful, sweet, and athletic. And then there's Mary, who everyone seems to forget is part of the family. She also seems to be hairier than average.

Anyway, the wealthiest family in the area is throwing a big ball and word has it that a wealthy bachelor will be in attendance.  Mrs Steele thinks he will be perfect for Louise, which will solve all their problems. But the eligible bachelor suddenly drops dead during the party, and his traveling companion, a detective, determines that it was murder. Finally Beatrice has her chance to actually help solve a murder--though it crosses her mind that one of her neighbors is probably the killer, which is not an ideal intro to detecting. There are some hilarious scenes in this book--my favorite probably being when the always perfect Carolyn is in the music room playing the pianoforte with one hand and the harp with the other-then offers to go make scones for everyone.
