Marnie is divorced and happy living alone, though lately she's been feeling kind of lonely. Michael is separated from his beloved Nat due to the pressures of her not being able to get pregnant. He's living alone in the marital home, which is making him depressed. Their friend Cleo invites Michael and Marnie along with Conrad, Tessa, and her own teenage son, Anthony, on a walking tour of England. Tessa (who was supposed to be a fix-up for Michael) bails before the trip even begins. Conrad (who was supposed to be a fix-up for Marnie) bails after the first day. Then Cleo and Anthony bail. So only Michael and Marnie are left to slog through England in the rain. But once she gets past the physical misery, Marnie finds she enjoys talking to Michael. Michael is charmed by Marnie but his hope is to get back together with Nat. There are some interesting turns on the journey as the two get to know each other better--and there is not a fairy tale happily ever after as the two need time to figure out what they really want out of life and each other. A delightful read with both humor and sadness sprinkled throughout.
