Good Sense of Place and Time

If you're looking for a series with an excellent sense of place and time, specifically South Africa in the 1950s, check out Malla Nunn's "Emmanuel Cooper" series. The first is called A Beautiful Place to Die. The newest is called Let The Dead Lie. The whole class system (based largely on race)in South Africa plays a major part in the story.

In the first book, Cooper, a police detective, runs up against the corrupt Powers That Be while trying to solve a murder. In the second, no longer a policeman, he becomes the prime suspect in a murder that he didn't commit.
Cooper is an interesting character and you're rooting for him to get his life back.
