Time to curl up with a good mystery

A body turns up in a London cemetery. A toddler is led off to his death. There's a new boss with a secret drinking problem and an old friend who's reluctantly trying to get some fashion sense. Yes, it's the next installment in the always engrossing Inspector Linley series, This Body of Death, by Elizabeth George. Although the author is American, she really does seem to have her finger on the pulse of life in England.

The unique New Forest setting is intriguing. The mystery is a good one. And it's nice to check in on the lives of Inspector Linley, still getting over the death of his wife, and his ever-faithful sidekick, Barbara Havers.

Though the PBS tv series based on these books was entertaining, I prefer the books because you get a better sense of the main characters: Linley, Barbara, Simon, Deborah, Winston. The tv series cut out most of the supporting cast and made Barbara very attractive (her lack of social skills and fashion sense is what gives her so much charm in the books).

If you haven't read any of these books, start at the beginning so you can see how the characters develop over time. The first book is A Great Deliverance.
