Death Angel by Linda Fairstein

Death Angel begins with the discovery of the body of a girl in Central Park. No one knows who she was--or why silver replicas of some Central Park monuments were found nearby. So begins the latest chapter in the adventures of DA Alex Cooper and her cop buddies Mike Chapman and Mercer Wallace.

I like this series because you learn a lot about the history of New York as the story unfolds. For instance, who knew that a whole African-American community was destroyed to build the park? Or that caves built into the original design became the scenes of crimes so often that their entrances were covered up? Or that cemeteries are buried underneath parts of the park? The mystery of the dead girl is good but the historical aspects make the story even more interesting. You'll never think of Central Park the same way after reading this book.
