Wonder by RJ Palacio

Auggie Pullman was born with severe facial deformities. He had to undergo numerous procedures and had to be kept under close watch for the first several years of his life. But when he was 10, his parents decided it was time for him to go to real school. Wonder tells the story of his first year of middle school--which is difficult for anyone, much less a kid who doesn't look like everyone else. But Auggie is both a smart kid and a survivor and his story will warm your heart.

My favorite part of the book is when Justin, the boyfriend of Auggie's sister, is pondering how unkind the universe has been to Auggie. But then he decides the universe takes care of its most fragile creatures in ways we cannot even see, for example with a loving family and a steadfast best friend who is willing to be shunned by everyone else. Yes, he decides, the universe takes care of all its little birds.

This book will give you a whole new perspective on the impact of kindness.
