Dear Mr. You by Mary-Louise Parker

Think back on all the people who have had an impact on you as a person--parents and other relatives, teachers, bosses, romantic partners, good friends. Actress/writer Mary-Louise Parker decided to look back at all the men in her life who have made her the person she is today and to write them "letters" telling them what a profound influence they've had on her. It's a fascinating book and she has had a very interesting life.

She starts with a letter to the grandfather who died before she was born but about whom she had heard plenty of colorful stories. And it ends with letters to her daughter's future husband and to the unknown fisherman who helped bring joy to her dying father. While a couple of the letters were a little too metaphorical for me, most were very touching and sometimes very funny. And it makes you really appreciate all the people in your own life who were there to lend a hand or a shoulder to cry on.
