The Last Mile by David Baldacci

Melvyn Mars had a bright career in the NFL ahead of him when his parents were brutally murdered in their small Texas town. All the evidence pointed to him. And although he proclaimed his innocence, he was found guilty and sentenced to death. Just as he's about to be executed, another man on death row in another state says he was the killer. So Melvyn gets a reprieve.

Amos Decker (from a previous Baldacci book) is driving and listening to the radio. He hears the story about Melvyn and is intrigued--because something similar had happened to him. He's just been recruited to be a part of a small FBI task force and he convinces the team  that this is the case they should start with.

Decker thinks Melvyn is telling the truth and didn't actually kill his parents. But he doesn't think the guy who confessed did either. He and the team begin to pull at the threads of the case, which puts their lives in danger--and threatens Melvyn's freedom.

It's an engrossing story. I figured out a couple of the "surprise" twists before they were revealed but the ending was not what I expected. Good choice for a day at the beach or a long plane ride.
