The Other Side of Silence by Philip Kerr

I love the Bernie Gunther series by Philip Kerr. We've seen our hero go from a cop in Berlin before the war to a man on the run after the war. In Silence, he has landed, under an assumed name, as a concierge in a hotel in the south of France in 1956. But he can't escape his past. A man Bernie has hated for years pops up in his hotel and soon Bernie is dragged into a (convoluted) scheme involving blackmail, Somerset Maugham, Russian spies working for the British government, and of course plenty of duplicity.

It's a good story--and I do love  the flawed character that is Bernie. But it's not my favorite book in this series. Too much time is spent on Russian spies. There is another book coming out next year and I can't wait to see what happens to Bernie next. One can only hope he finds a nice woman who really appreciates him.
