Rich People Problems by Kevin Kwan

I don't know quite how to describe this entertaining series (which starts with Crazy Rich Asians). It's sort of like the old TV show Dynasty but set in Singapore and Hong Kong and everyone really is obscenely rich and fairly crazy.

In the middle of all the insanity, we have a few level-headed couples: particularly, Nick & his wife Rachel, who live in the U.S., and Charlie & Astrid, who were broken up as young lovers by their parents and are now trying to get out of unhappy marriages to be together. The action starts when Nick's beloved grandmother, from whom he has been estranged because she opposed his marriage to Rachel, is dying in Singapore. Rachel convinces him to go and patch things up with her before it's too late. So off he goes--and finds himself in the middle of warring family factions over who will get control of her massive estate, Tyersall Park, once she's gone.

There are so many subplots and characters floating around that you really do sometimes have to refer to the family tree conveniently placed at the beginning of the book. And don't skip the footnotes, many of which are hilarious.
