Barely Legal by Stuart Woods

I have to say, I'm really enjoying the "Herbie Fisher" books (with Stone Barrington as a backup character) a lot more than the recent Stone Barrington books (which have been focusing mostly on sex and spending as much money as possible). The Herbie books actually have a plot.

In this one, financial lawyer Herbie ends up filling in for a criminal lawyer on a criminal case--a councilman's son was arrested for dealing drugs. The criminal lawyer told Herbie that there was a plea deal in place and to just accept it. But when he meets the kid, Herbie thinks he really is innocent
and decides to stall till the regular lawyer comes back. However, the regular lawyer has hightailed it out of town because, unbeknownst to Herbie, there is a lot going on behind the scenes, including some mob involvement. Then Herbie finds out that someone has given a vicious loan shark one of his old IOUs for $90,000 (even though he had already repaid it). However the recipient is dead so Herbie can't prove it. So now he has mob thugs and loan shark thugs after him and he's trying to keep an innocent kid out of jail. Then there's Herbie's fiancee, who is not all she seems. The poor guy.

It's a fast-paced story with some interesting twists and turns. If you're in the mood for a quick read with a likable main character, give Barely Legal a whirl.
