Born a Crime (redux) by Trevor Noah

Sorry I've been MIA. I was rereading Born a Crime for my book group. And it was just as good the second time around. In case the name is not ringing a bell, Noah took over the Daily Show when Jon Stewart retired. Born a Crime relates his unconventional childhood in South Africa. Since his mother was black and his father was a white European, under apartheid, his birth literally was a crime. So his mother had to keep him out of sight for much of his childhood--which made for both a lonely childhood and the birth of a very active imagination.

In a country where race is everything, a boy who is neither black nor white has a hard time fitting in.
So parts of this book are heartbreaking--but others are laugh-out-loud funny. There's also a lot of fascinating information about South Africa itself. Even if you're not sure who Trevor Noah is, it's worth reading--if for no other reason than to "meet" his mother, who is a real force of nature.
