Without Fear or Favor by Robert Tanenbaum

This is  the latest in the ongoing Butch and Marlene series featuring NYC DA Butch Karp and his fiery wife Marlene (though Marlene isn't in this story much--and their kids are MIA). No, this is definitely a Butch-based courtroom novel, which I liked. In the middle of this series, things got a little off the rails but the author seems to be back on track.

The story starts with the death of a young white cop and the death of a young black boy at the hands of another cop. Racial tensions are running high and a man calling himself Nat X (afer Nat Turner and Malcolm X) is thought to be behind a lot of the unrest and is thus the focus of a police manhunt.
Much of the story is set in the courtroom during the trial of Nat X for the murder of the young cop--and his involvement in the death of the young black boy.

It's a good story. I look forward to the next Butch and Marlene adventure--though I'd like to see more of  Marlene and the family.
