Greeks Bearing Gifts by Philip Kerr

The sardonic Bernie Gunther is back. It's now 1957 and the former Berlin cop is living under an assumed name in Munich. Through a complicated set of circumstances that are typical of Bernie's life, he ends up working as an investigator for a large insurance company. He gets sent to Greece to investigate a large claim for a ship that sank off the coast. Naturally Bernie comes across old Nazis, people looking for revenge against the Nazis, and several dead bodies. He also comes across a beautiful Greek woman who seems drawn to him--which makes Bernie certain he shouldn't trust her.

I love the character of Bernie, who is definitely a survivor but basically a good man.
If you're unfamiliar with this series, start at the beginning with March Violets.
