Save me the Plums by Ruth Reichl

Plums tells the story of Ruth Reichl's years running Gourmet magazine. When she gets hired, she is a restaurant critic in Los Angeles who really has no clue how a magazine is run. But she's a quick study and has a good team so she gets up to speed. It's fascinating to see what goes on behind the scenes--the politics, the fights over what's appropriate for a cover, discussions about whether "cupcakes" are too plebian for Gourmet readers. There are even a handful of recipes sprinkled throughout the book.
