Evvie Drake Starts Over by Linda Holmes

Evvie (rhymes with Chevy) lives in a small town in Maine. She is just getting ready to leave her mentally abusive husband, beloved (by everyone else) town doctor, Tim. As she's packing up her car, she gets a phone call that Tim has been killed in a car crash. She has to act like the grieving widow but is secretly kind of glad that he's out of her life. Her best friend, single-dad Andy, is there for her all the way--though she never tells him what was really going on in her marriage. Andy has a friend named Dean, who is a major league pitcher who has suddenly lost his mojo. Andy thinks Evvie should let Dean rent the apartment that's attached to her house because it would be good for both Evvie and Dean. He could use the seclusion and she could use the rent money. And they both could use the company. Eventually, Dean and Evvie become friends, share secrets, and try to move on with their respective lives.

Though Evvie came off as a little snarky from time to time, I loved Dean, Andy, and Andy's girlfriend. It's a good story about a group of adults trying to move forward and overcome the obstacles in their past.
