The Last Passenger by Chas. Finch

The Last Passenger is described as a prequel novel to the Charles Lenox series. Charles is the younger son of a wealthy family in London who has become a private detective. This one starts with the murder of a man on a train that arrives in Paddington Station--who, Charles deduces, was an American visiting London. With the help of his trusty valet Graham (my favorite character in this series) and an American investigator, Charles eventually unravels the whole sordid story. At the same time, he is falling in love with the beautiful Kitty Ashbrooke.

Since I've read this whole series out of order as I find the books at the library, the "prequel" aspect of this novel didn't particularly strike me. He's still best friends with Lady Jane. His brother is still in Parliament. Graham is still helping him solve cases--and keep up appearances. But I enjoyed the story and will continue to read the rest of this series as the books turn up at the library.
