The Summer Job by Lizzy Dent

Work has been super busy this week so I needed something light to read in my spare time. And I happened upon The Summer Job, which turned out to be the perfect choice. Birdy Finch and Heather Jones have been best friends since childhood. Birdy is estranged from her dysfunctional family and Heather's parents are dead. Birdy is always broke and struggling to find herself while Heather, who was left money when her father passed, is a renowned sommelier. Heather is supposed to take a summer job in Scotland, which she decides to blow off at the last minute, instead heading for Spain with her shifty boyfriend. Birdy, with no place else to go, decides to take the job in Scotland and pretend to be Heather, even though she knows pretty much nothing about wine.

Birdy thinks the place in Scotland is a little hole in the wall and she'll be able to fake it, but is dismayed to find out that it's a pretty tony hotel that is counting on having a real sommelier. The first few weeks don't go well, but most of the people at the hotel are understanding and try to help out the new girl till she gets her footing, while she's frantically trying to bone up on wines in her spare time. Then she becomes smitten with James, the chef, which adds a whole other layer of complexity to her dilemma.

Birdy is a likeable heroine so you're hoping she manages to pull this off, start something with James, and not have Heather kill her when she finds out how Birdy spent her summer. It's an entertaining romp and a good story for summer reading.
