The Consequences of Fear by Jacqueline Winspear

This is the latest Maisie Dobbs story, set during World War II. Maisie is working for the government in a top-secret position while still running her investigations agency. A young boy comes to her office one day and says he's seen a murder. The cops didn't believe him but he thinks Maisie might--and she does. So she and her right-hand man, Billy, start investigating and eventually uncover what really happened that night as well as the events that led to it. At the same time, Maisie's government job has her assessing the fitness of candidates to be sent undercover into occupied France, a task she doesn't relish, especially when people she is acquainted with (like her best friend's long-time nanny) are among the candidates. And then there's Maisie's romance with the dashing American, Mark. If you're a long-time Maisie fan, you will enjoy this installment.
