We Are Not Like Them by C Pride & J Piazza

Jen and Riley have been friends since childhood. Jen is white with a single mother and a kind of chaotic childhood. Riley is black and with a close-knit family. Because Jen's household is so unstructured, she spends most of her time with Riley's family. Over the years, Riley has moved to different cities as she pursues her career in TV broadcasting but they've stayed friends. Now they're excited to be back in the same city. But then Jen's husband Kevin, a cop, is involved in the shooting of what turns out to be an unarmed black teen. And this threatens to destroy the women's lifelong friendship.

Jen is finally pregnant after several miscarriages and she knows her husband is a good man who is devastated by the teen's death. Riley is assigned to cover the story of the shooting so she decides to pull away from Jen and not tell anyone she is friends with the cop's wife.

The one I felt sorriest for was Jen, who had nothing to do with the shooting but finds her life totally uprooted, her husband in a deep depression, her home unsafe to live in, and her best friend MIA--all while being extremely pregnant. I also felt sorry for the teen who got killed in the first chapter of the book. He was simply reaching into his pocket to turn down the music he was listening to, but the cops thought he was reaching for a gun and shot him.

I think this would be a good book group book, and indeed there are even discussion questions at the end.
