Lone Women by Victor LaValle

Lone Women is a strange book. Adeline Henry is a tall black woman in the early 1900s living in a black  farming enclave in California. One day she sets her house on fire and sets out with a huge steamer trunk for Montana, where she heard single women can lay claim to land. While you can see what she's thinking about the move, she doesn't really seem prepared for starting over alone without a lot of money or supplies. And what is she lugging around in that steamer trunk? That's what everyone wants to know but those who try to find out are usually sorry.

When she first arrives, Adeline meets a family called The Mudges--a mother and 4 blind boys--who are not what they seem. She also becomes friends with her neighbor Grace and her child, Sam. However, there are some people in town who want to take the law into their own hands and Adeline ends up in their sights, along with Grace, Sam and some of Adeline's other friends. It's an interesting book and I would love to know what anyone else thought of it.
