The Unraveling of Julia by Lisa Scottoline
Let me start by saying I am a long-time fan of Lisa Scottoline. I loved her series about the all-women law firm in Philly and have enjoyed many of her stand-alone books. That being said, I did NOT love The Unraveling of Julia.
The story starts with Julia and her hausband walking home from a late dinner. She gets a feeling that something bad is going to happen then her husband ends up dead when a man in a hoodie comes out of nowhere and stabs him to death. She becomes a recluse until she gets a notification that a woman in Italy whose name she is completely unfamiliar with has left her a fortune and a villa in Tuscany. Her best friend Courtney tells her to go to Italy and talk to the lawyer--and hire an investigator to find out who this benefactor is. Reluctantly she goes. The villa is in ruins. And Julia starts having terrifying nightmares and visions. A real estate agent keeps pressuring her to sell the villa, but she doesn't want to leave until she finds out why this woman left her a fortune. Then strange men start following her and she can't get the local police to take her seriously. If this were me, I would have either taken the next flight home or moved to a hotel with security staff. But not Julia, who stays alone in the creepy old villa.
At one point there is a medium. There are visions of a dead duchess. It was all a little too weird for me.
I'm hoping there is another book in the all-women law firm on Lisa's agenda.
