Colton Gentry's Third Act by Jeff Zentner
Colton Gentry is a moderately successful country singer married to a more successful singer when his life takes a turn for the worse. His best friend Duane is killed during a mass shooting. Colton's response is to get drunk and start spouting anti-gun rhetoric during a concert--to a not-at-all-receptive crowd. He ends up getting fired from the tour and his record label and loses his wife (who was cheating on him anyway). Broke and depressed, Colton returns to small town Kentucky, where he grew up. And where he runs into Luann, his first love, who is now running a successful farm-to-table restaurant. She gives him the chance to start the next act of his life. It's a good story about second (and third) chances, and forgiveness.
I love Colton's mother, who takes him in and tries to gently encourage him to get on with his life. And his old high school friend Derrick, who is initially not too eager to forgive Colton and resume their friendship. And I especially love Luann, who is a smart, feisty force of nature who knows what she wants and is determined to succeed. Colton himself is a multilayered character who constantly struggles to balance the desire to drink with the desire to have a happy life with a wife and kids and a career he likes.
