Good People by Patmeena Sabit

The Sharaf family left Afghnistan and fled to Virginia. They were dirt poor when they arrived but through the father's hard word, eventually became wealthy. The eldest daughter, Zorah, is the jewel of the family. Her father wants her to go to Harvard and become a Supreme Court justice but she wants to be a makeup artist and live in NYC. Zorah grew up in America and wants to live like American girls, but her parents want her to follow the more conservative Afghan and Muslim rules of society. Tensions rise then tragedy strikes and the whole community is drawn in.

The story is told in the form of testimony from a variety of people: Zorah's classmates, her parents' friends, the non-Afghan neighbors of the family, local reporters, activitists. It's a thought-provoking look at integrating into a new society that is so different from your own.
