Ironwood by Michael Connelly

 This is the second in Connelly's new Catalina Island-based series featuring Sargent Stilwell. And I liked this one better than the first.  One of Stil's deputies gets a tip from a CI about a possible drug drop in the mountains. In the end, the deputy is dead, another deputy is seriously injured and the pilot flying the plane escapes. The more Stil investigates, the murkier the case becomes. Stil also starts working with Renee Ballard of the cold cases unit on the mainland investigating a possible serial killer who preys on women hiking alone. He gets involved when a backpack belong to a missing women, possibly one of the killer's victims, turns up on Catalina. All in all, it's an action-packed adventure. And it's nice seeing Ballard--and briefly even Harry Bosch--playing a role in the story.
