For the Michiganders in the bunch

It's a tradition in tiny Starvation Lake, Michigan to throw old shoes and hockey skates up into a giant old tree. Former wild child Gracie is found hanging from said tree one snowy night, minus one shoe. But was it a suicide or murder? No one but newspaper man Gus Carpenter seems interested in finding the truth. So starts The Hanging Tree by Bryan Gruley.

Aside from the fact that there was too much hockey talk for this non hockey fan, it was a compelling read, with a great sense of place about life in a hardluck small town in wintry northern Michigan.
