It's a tradition in tiny Starvation Lake, Michigan to throw old shoes and hockey skates up into a giant old tree. Aside from the fact that there was too much hockey talk for this non hockey fan, it was a compelling read, with a great sense of place about life in a hardluck small town in wintry northern Michigan.
