Cure by Robin Cook

In the past, Robin Cook's novels always managed to cover a timely healthcare-related topic (ie, the need for transplant organs or the importance of the bottom line in HMOs) and make you think. But in recent years, he has focused his attention on a series featuring a couple of doctors working for the Medical Examiner's Office in NYC. I like the characters of Jack and Laurie Stapleton but I kind of wish Cook would go back to his roots.

In Cure, Jack and Laurie inadvertently get caught up with the Japanese mob. WAY too much time is spent on said Japanese mobsters, to the detriment of the medical part of the story. If you've liked the previous Jack & Laurie stories, you'll probably like this one. But I'd have to say, if you're new to Robin Cook, check out some of his older stuff first.
