The Thousand by K. Guilfoile

You may vaguely remember the name Pythagorus from high school geomtry. Well, apparently he was a big thinker back in BC times. And in the latest book from Kevin Guilfoile, he was apparently the leader of a cult (The Thousand) that continues to this day. That's part of the problem with this book. The Thousand seem to be a powerful bunch but we're never quite sure what their goal is outside of maintaining their power.

The main character, Canada Gold, is intriguing and appealing. She has a neurotransmitter implanted in her brain which gives her unique skills and abilities. Unfortunately, that makes her a target for The Thousand for some reason. Lots of paranoia. A former lover who is trying to save her (but whom she has been misled to believe is trying to kill her). Some cool locations (Las Vegas for the first half, Chicago during a power outage for the second half). The character of Canada makes it worth your time but it's not the best thriller I've read this summer.
