The Sins of the Father by Jeffrey Archer

This is the next part of the Clifton family saga, begun in Only Time Will Tell. Harry Clifton, to escape his past, has switched identities with an American named Tom Bradshaw, who died when a German U boat sank the ship they were on. Unfortunately, when he arrives in New York, Harry finds out that Tom is wanted for murdering his brother and is quickly arrested. A powerful lawyer for the Bradshaw family, wanting to protect the family's reputation, cuts a deal that Harry will go to prison for 6 years on a lesser charge. Meanwhile, back in England, everyone thinks Harry went down with the ship--except his true love, Emma. She is soon on a boat to New York herself to find out what really happened. We also pick up the story lines of Harry's best friend, the wealthy Giles Barrington and his odious father Hugo. It's an engrossing story that, as in the first volume, ends with a cliffhanger. My only quibble is that Jeffrey Archer assumed you had read the first volume recently and could remember all the plot twists (which I couldn't). I wish he had included a few flashbacks here and there to remind us of what had happened in volume one. Still, a good summer read and I can't wait to see what happens next with Harry, Emma and the gang.
